Palimpsest

'Arboreal configuration' from the exhibition Palmpsest 2020

Palimpsest, opens 19th September 2020 at Defiance Gallery, Mary Place, Paddington, Sydney

The title for this show comes from the noun. a manuscript on which two or more successive texts have been written, each one being erased to make room for the next.

Palimpsest sums up the layered nature of the process of the paintings in this show with their additions, erasures, scrapings and scratchings. The works in themselves are layered as is the subject of the paintings.

The diversity of textures within the plant communities of the Hawkesbury Sandstone country were the starting point for these clay paintings. Connections between branch lines echo across light filled voids and veils of canopy.

The paintings are made with clay washes, oxides, black ink and PVA binder on burnt plywood.

In appreciation of the unique and threatened environment in Australia a quarter of the artist’s sales from this show will be donated to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.
